Marxism Historical Approach

1. Karl Marx (1818 – 1883) and Friedrich Engels (1820- 1895) were the German theories that believe the social problem that occurs during that time is because of the capitalist economic system. [i] Capitalist is a class that is according to Marx exploiting the proletariat which is the workers and continues until today.

2.The intense competition between capitalist also manipulates the government institution such as police forces, court of law to function according to their will. The communist manifesto (1848) was published that described the utopia and how the society should be free from the state and borgeois. Marx and Engel believe that the ideal system is communist and the private property should be abolished. The goal is to form a socialist revolution and result the “dictatorship of proletariat” that will lead to fair, just and egalitarian society and more humane.[ii]

3.Marx also introduces the labour theory of value. The theory suggests that the capitalist reduce the amount of labour value to maximize the surplus value. Sometimes the cost of variable’s value such taxes, police and other make reduce of wages. The low wages of labour made the product that they produce unaffordable create a cycle that brings to depression of the economy. [iii]

4. The theory basically is about the idea of the capitalist that wanted to maximize profit by depressing their worker through consistent exploitation. Marx predicted that the socialist government will come next and people should aid of its coming. There is no socialist government until 1917 in the Russian revolution. Furthermore the application of Marxism idea by the Soviet Union and other Communist country led to tyranny and failure[iv]. However, the critical analysis of Marx makes the government more aware and concern about the condition of the working class.
